Causes of Obesity in Childhood and Adolescence

Obesity is already a problem in the United States and is becoming worse every year. This problem not only affects the individual who carries around the extra weight, but also the government that has to cover the health care costs of treating various health problems related to being overwheight. According to a National Health and Nutrition Examination survey, around 17 percent of children aged 2 to 19 are obese. This is almost one in five children. To come up with solutions, we need to understand first what causes obesity among children and adolescents.

The first cause of obesity is genetics, of course. Some children have a predisposition to be bigger and more solid than others. In general, if the parents are heavy, there is a good chance that their children will also be heavy. It’s just the way genetics work.

Chaotic eating habits and a complete disregard for the quality of the food one eats is the second major cause of obesity. Many children and adolescents make a habit out of snacking on something most of the time during the day. Many skip the breakfast and eat large meals in the evening before bed. Sweets are a major source of empty calories for children, while many adolescents are addicted to junk food.

The lack of exercise is another reason why obesity is becoming an increasing problem. Most children and adolescents don’t get even 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity per week. In other words, they are not expending the energy they get from food. This, coupled with the fact that sugars and fats found in junk food greatly increase the caloric intake, leads to a rapid gain in body weight.

In conclusion, by paying close attention to the diet of their children and encouraging adolescents to do physical exercise, parents can greatly decrease the risk of obesity in children. In addition, food quality should be more closely regulated (banning all fast food chains from operating near schools, for example).
